As part of the “Green Kick” project, which focuses on strengthening civil society’s role in decarbonization and combating climate change, working meetings were held with local government representatives selected to receive support in developing Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) as part of the project. The meetings took place held in June in Vrnjačka Banja, Novi Pazar, Petrovac na Mlavi, and Smederevska Palanka, with a meeting in Kragujevac scheduled for July 2.
Filip Obradović, a representative of Smart Kolektiv and the coordinator of the Green Kick project, visited the representatives of the cities and municipalities involved in the project to provide necessary guidelines and thoroughly walk them through all the steps of future work. In the coming period, local governments will work on developing strategic documents related to decarbonization and climate change. During the meetings, representatives received instructions on preparing various documents, forming a working team and advisory group, and the steps needed to apply for the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy initiative. This initiative allows local governments to demonstrate their commitment to achieving EU climate and energy goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
SECAP aims to help local communities identify and implement strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, and use renewable energy sources. These plans are crucial as they allow for adaptation at the local level, considering each community’s specific needs and resources. Besides reducing emissions, SECAP also includes measures to increase resilience to climate change, such as improving infrastructure and raising public awareness about environmental issues.
The “Green Kick” project is implemented by Smart Kolektiv in partnership with Center for Development and Support from Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and FORS Montenegro from Nikšić (Montenegro). This project is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI). EUKI is an instrument for financing projects of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). EUKI’s call for project idea selection was conducted by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The comprehensive objective of EUKI is to promote climate cooperation within the European Union (EU) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
